we did something awesome tonight

We went to the movies at the imax theater inside one of the local museums....

and we saw......
BACK TO THE FUTURE!
It was part of the imax's "Theater Throwbacks" where they rerun old movies from past decades.  This year they have mainly been showing 80s movies.  I have been wanting to go to the Theater Throwbacks for a year now, so it was a wish come true.  Previously, I had really wanted to see The Sting and a few others, but I was good with going to any of them.  Seriously, so excited.  It just came down to timing that this Thursday's movie was Back to the Future.  Both Spenser and I had seen it when we were much younger, but neither one of us remembered much about it.

While we were standing in line, I saw this girl who definitely stood out to me.  She was wearing jeans, white tennis shoes, light floral blouse and pink jacket.  I thought, "hmm, interesting style."  But hey, you go girl, you know?  Then, this guy came up to her and I thought, "What a couple!  They both have kind of a different style."  He was wearing jeans, white tennis shoes, a plaid shirt, a denim shirt, aviators and a red vest.  Still, I was completely oblivious.  It was only after the movie got out and I saw them again that I realized, "Duh, they're Marty McFly and Jennifer!"  What a fun idea though-to dress up in character for a night out!

As for the movie, I loved it!  I was smiling wide the whole time.  Spenser would look over and laugh at my constant beaming.   The movie has such a charm about it.  I loved all the references back and forth between decades such as Star Wars, Ronald Reagan, Chuck Berry, etc.  Plus, afterwards Spenser and I talked about what it'd be like to meet our parents in high school.  Isn't that a neat thing to think about?
Watching it on the imax just made it oh-so-much-better.  So. Big. Ohmygosh.  I'm blaming the largeness of the screen on my life-like reactions.  (Spenser was again laughing, but I imagine for good reason.  I was into it, what can I say?)  Also, the opening scene with the clocks on the big screen was magic.  But the best scene to see on the big screen was definitely:
Marty McFly rocking out at his parents' high school dance.  Felt like I was front row at that dance. Awesome.
McFly plays guitar, skateboards, and stands up for his dad...
his mom was right, what a "dreamboat"!

A familiar visitor

Look at that long-haired cutie!
He is now on his spring break.  (Schools, why can't you all be the same schedule?)  And lucky for me, he chose to spend a portion of it here with me.  Tonight we went out for sushi and tried a new place, which was fun.  I'm already wanting to miss class tomorrow and stay home with him.  But I will go because I should. Ugh. haha!

Spring Break

No, this post is not filled with sunny days or crazy places, even though it's spring break.  I enjoyed mine quietly at home: relaxing and taking care of things that needed to be done here and there.  As you can see above, we still have snow... and it's been pretty foggy too!

Before my spring break began, there was an interesting turn of events with my car.  The air pressure light kept coming on, even though I had it recently checked.  Sooo, I took it in and one of my tires had lost a lot of air, so much so it was pretty much flat.  They told me they couldn't fix it...(blah, blah, blah, get on with it, right? ;) )  In the end, after freaking out a little, I bought a tire.  I don't even know what kind of tire because the list to choose from was a mixture of capital letters and numbers and the run down the nice car mechanic-fellow gave me was pretty brief.  But I picked one and it was put on my car.  And I felt all grown-up as I drove off to my awaited time of leisure.  (Seriously, though, I consider myself a pretty adept being, but car issues felt like such an adult turning point. eek!)

This is how the rest of my break went:
One evening was spent hanging out with these awesome and beautiful ladies!  Becca and Margaret happened to match by chance with their striped shirts and bright polka dot scarves.  Accidental matchy friends are so adorable!  Adele and I got goofy.  Nothing new there.  And yes, I am kissing a gnome.
I tried out my new telescopic camera lens that I received for Christmas this year.  (Thanks, Dad!!) I just tried it out on some nature shots of the back yard.  Nothing too exciting as far as photos go^^, but I already love the aperture settings on it.  Seriously.  Also, now nothing will be too far away. Yay!  I can't wait to take it to a performance or sporting event or something.  Or maybe I'll catch a far off sailboat on a pier or an animal seen from a hiking trail with it.
Lastly, we made beignets at my house and they were delicious.  Fancy donuts and powdered sugar goodness. Mhmm.

Paper Art

The other day I was walking in the old downtown, and I stumbled upon the neatest window display.  The building that houses the display is no longer a shop, in fact it's currently empty save for its windows.  The windows were filled with paper-crafted beauties.  Some were paper ornaments hanging from above and some were made into 3D decorations that were scattered about, adorning the books that were wrapped to match.
The windows had a magic about them.  Maybe it was that it was an unexpected treasure; a still life in a vacancy.  Or maybe it was that the artwork was created from books; a world of words and fiction transformed and manifested into a different art form.  Whatever it was, it was a lovely surprise in my day.

I found out later that this display is part of a city program for the arts.  They are hiring different local artists to create window displays for the stores, restaraunts, and other buildings downtown.  I am looking forward to seeing what other beautiful decor pops up!

Postcard from France!

Look at what I got in the mail today!
Before Lauren left for France I asked her to send me a postcard and true to her word here it is.

She wrote that on her first week in France she visited the Chateau Chenonceau shown on the card.  She was enthralled by its fairytale-like characteristics and I can see why.  I googled the chateau and I'm pretty sure I let out an audible "wow" under my breath.  It looks amazing.  I'm so happy she got to see such gorgeous grounds in person.
